Chapter 8-Social Class & Social Stratification

Social Cla$$ and Social Stratification

I choose chapter 8 because this is something I think is very interesting. Growing up in Idaho I knew what middle class and poor was, and the rich on TV. One thing I did not notice until I moved away was the amount of upper class. I had no idea that there were that many "rich" people, or people with excess money. It wasn't until then that I noticed the differences in how children grow and the different lives you have in the same culture, but with different amounts of money.

"Americans are the only people in the world known to me whose status anxiety prompts them to advertise their college and university affiliations in the rear window of their automobiles."  said Paul Fussell in (1992) Class: A Guide Through the American Status System

Here is a link to Social Class in America written by Hedyeh Nassari (2008), an article to briefly explain different social classes in America. Keep in mind that this is an opinion and not from a textbook, you may not share the views the the author:

Statistics show that the rich keep getting richer and the poor keep getting poorer. As we learning in our Sociology 101 class, this is based on the percentage of people who own everything and control all of the money. Check out  "Did you know the U.S. Middle Class is Disappearing. These stats prove it." (2010)  http://youtu.be/2gcuAEvp3J8

Below is a link that will take you to a quiz to see what social class you are. It has about 30 questions and this is why I found it was interesting. The questions that is asks you to determine what class you are go along the lines of politics, family and values. It is short and entertaining. I scored as lower class status,  and well, now it's confirmed..
